Are Item Upgrade As Important As Everyone Says?

Upgrades to gear increase its base stats and sometimes boosts its extras. The value of these upgrades is determined by their tiers, requirements and the number of random augmentations that are applied.

Reroll Tokens

Three types of reroll tokens are available such as upgrade rare, legendary and rare. Each of these upgrades the item to a better quality. To create them, you need a higher level token to reroll. Upgrades require a common item. Rare upgrades require an item that is either unique or legendary. Legendary upgrades require three legendary pieces.

Blueprints appear in the form of envelopes at the beginning of each Preparation Stage, and can be opened by grabbing them using Interact. Leveling

A piece of gear can be upgraded up to five times. Each time an item is upgraded, its stats will increase by a small amount. The highest level for an item is 19.
Once an item has reached its maximum level, its upgrades will no longer be available for it. Once a piece of equipment reaches a specific upgrade track (e.g. Upgrades for the Veteran or Explorer track will be discounted.
Upgrade components are a form of equipment that can be put into weapons, armor, trinkets, and gathering tools to provide an additional bonus or effect when the equipment is equipped. They can be purchased from vendors, looted, obtained by completing quests or traded between players. Upgrade components can be swapped by acquiring new ones. However, this can ruin the previous upgrade.
Requirements

The upgrade to the helm "Foundation of the Sun" for instance, increases defense base and gives an additional 20 percent chance of blocking. In addition the dps enhancement "Wildfire" boosts weapon damage.
Upgrades can be beneficial to some items, but not because they boost stats. They are more valuable for the players when they achieve a perfect roll. For instance, a flawlessly rolled 200/6 504 armor set piece is highly sought-after in the melee PvP community and could be worth 20-50x more than the non-upp'd version.
When you select an upgrade component to be inserted into an item the game will display an in-game window that lists the required requirements. These include the item type (either weapon or armor) the tier of the item, the Upgrade Token required, and the amount of progress needed to complete the upgrade.
The game will add an item in your inventory when you have completed the prerequisites for an upgrade. The progress bar will then update to show you how far you are towards completing the upgrade. You can also track the status of an item upgrade by visiting any NPC that upgrades items.
